Top 7 Picnic Spots in Austin

With some 16,000 acres of parks, trails and greenbelts, Austin is practically the poster child for outdoor adventures. Pack a basket and spread a blanket throughout July – which happens to be National Picnic Month – with this handy guide to the best picnic spots in Austin.

Texas State Capitol

It may be situated smack dab in the heart of Austin, but the Texas Capitol complex offers an oasis from the hustle-and-bustle of downtown. Spread a blanket on the manicured lawn and enjoy a leisurely picnic.

Zilker Park

This 351-acre park is arguably the most popular in town, and is considered Austin’s most-loved park. Train rides, a playscape for kids, a swimming pool, and jogging trails are all available. Pack a picnic and hit the park for Blues on the Green or any number of events hosted in the park.

Barton Springs Pool

This huge, spring-fed swimming hole is surrounded by lovely gardens and pecan trees. The pool is fed by spring waters that maintain a year-round temperature of about 68 degrees – perfect for a hot July day. Pack your lunch and bask in the summer heat.

McKinney Falls State Park

Think of the park as Austin’s backyard; just 13 miles from the state capitol. Here you can camp, hike, mountain or road bike, go bouldering, and picnic. You can also fish and swim in Onion Creek.

Mueller Lake Park

This East Austin neighborhood park across from the Thinkery features a very modern-design. It’s adjacent to a little lake where you can feed the ducks, take a stroll and spread out a picnic blanket.

Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell provides a spectacular vista of Lake Austin, surrounding bluffs, the 360 bridge and downtown skyline. Climb the stairs or path to reach the highest point in the city, and you can even take a picnic – tables and grills are available.

Pease District Park

Popular with picnickers and joggers thanks to a convenient location and almost palpable serenity, Pease Park is also a favored hangout of students from the nearby University of Texas. Many local events are held here throughout the year.

Wherever you embark on a picnic adventure this Summer, be sure to get out and enjoy all that Austin has to offer!
