There’s no shortage of comedy clubs in Los Angeles. Some of the most well-known include Comedy Central Stage, The Laugh Factory and The Imrov. But there are countless other venues where the laughs are just as loud even though the audience isn’t as large. Next time you’re in the mood to literally LOL, check out some of these lesser known clubs that we consider the best places to see comedy in LA.
Before they had their own specials on Netflix, John Mulaney, Aziz Ansari and other big names performed in front of the couches at Comedy Living Room. The club got its start in—you guessed it!—the living room of Matt Lottman and Frank Chad Muniz a few years back. Now they host a monthly show at different venues with a lineup of the best up-and-coming comics around.
If you enjoy character-driven sketches and hilarious improv, you’ll love the legendary performances at The Groundlings on Melrose Avenue. Melissa McCarthy, Will Forte, Jim Rash and Kristin Wiig were all a part of The Groundlings troupe at one time or another.
On select Saturdays each month, comedians host a comedy show/drinking game in their own backyards. Audience members make up “drink now” rules that the comedians don’t know, and every time a topic or word is mentioned everyone drinks—performers included. The result is a crazy, rowdy, side-splitting show with an after party you might not remember in the morning.
With a low stage and exposed brick backdrop, Mi Westside Comedy Theater is the quintessential comedy club. They feature both improv and stand-up, in a relaxed atmosphere. Although it’s somewhat quaint, Aziz Ansari, Dave Chappelle and Demetri Martin have all headlined here.
